Junior Round Up

East Cork JAFC First Round.

Lisgoold 0-12 v 1-03 Ballinacurra (half time: 0-07 v 1-02)

A sunny but breezy Clonmult Memorial Park in Midleton was the venue for this first round clash between these two adversaries. Both sides came into the game in reasonable form; Ballinacurra with 2 wins from 3 in Division 1 and Lisgoold with a similar record in Division 2. It was no surprise so that with 10 minutes remaining, the outcome was in the balance with 2 points separating the sides. However, a few key changes by Lisgoold led to a strong finish and they won with a bit to spare. Lisgoold playing with a strong wind advantage in the first half, raced into a 0-06 to 0-01 point lead after 15 minutes after some excellent wind assisted long range kicking from John Cashman and Jamie Woods and a fisted point from Noel Connery. Ballinacurra were finding the elements tough but they hauled themselves back into this game with a close range goal on 23 minutes despite a brave save by Ciaran Cronin in the build-up. A late John Cashman point left the sides separated by 2 points and Ballinacurra set to play with their backs to the wind for the second half. A tactical switch brought John Cronin to centre back and Cathal Cashman into midfield for the second half. The moved benefitted both players with Cathal centrally involved in most second half plays and John sweeping up matters behind him. Ballinacurra registered a point 2 minutes into the second half but it was to be their last score. In a difficult day for free taking, their wides mounted up and they also lost a couple of key players to black cards. After 40 minutes the score was 0-08 to 1-03 after Cian Scannell landed over a super score from the left corner. There was no score registered again until the last 10 minutes as both defences got on top. Lisgoold did have a couple of missed opportunities in this period including a saved penalty after Jamie Woods was brought down in the box. John Cashman struck it firmly drawing a fine save by the goalkeeper. With 10 minutes to go, Liam O’Shea was on the pitch and his direct running caused a lot of problems. One of these runs set up Kieran Cashman who hooked over a close in left-footed effort, before a couple of more points from John Cashman. The score of the game was to come when Liam landed a great long range kick from right out of the touchline before John Cashman tapped over a close in free to end proceedings. In the end, a first round championship win and some satisfaction with long range point kicking. Lisgoold now advance to round 3 of the competition. Team: C. Cronin, A. Donovan, B. Flynn, Caoimhan O’Shea, K. Cashman (0-01), C. Cashman, P. Leahy, M. O’Connell, J. Cronin, P. O’Mahony, J. Cashman (0-08, 0-03 frees), N. Connery (0-01), J. Woods (0-01), E. O’Sullivan, C.
