Lisgoold/Leamlara Ladies Football Club News 28/8/16-14/10/16 - 2016-10-14 22:30:00

Our U8s took part in the Passage West U8/U10 Blitz on September 2nd. Everyone had a great day and played very well in their matches. We would like to thank Passage West and all those who help make this the highlight of the U8/U10 Calendar.

U8 End of year Blitz.
Our U8 girls finished off their season by taking part in the end of year blitz hosted by Glanmire. All 14 of the girls played really well in their 3 games against Glanmire, Delaney’s and Inch. Another enjoyable day out on the u8 calendar. We would like to thank David/Roy for all their work this year and making it so much fun for the girls. We appreciate your time, commitment and enthusiasm. Thank you to the parents for bringing the girls to training, matches and the various blitzes they attended this year

Our U10s also travelled to Passage West for the U8/U10 Blitz. The girls worked well as a team and showed great skill in their games.

East Cork U 10 D Champions 2016. Incredible game in Watergrasshill vs Glanmire B. Well done to both teams. We hope to have many more days like this. Congratulations to Vince/Valerie/Yvonne who have worked hard all year with the girls. Your time/effort and dedication to this wonderful group of girls is very much appreciated. Thank you also to the parents for bringing the girls to training and matches. We would also like to thank Ryan’s Supervalu Glanmire for providing drinks and crisps to all teams on the day. Thank you to Ber and all at Watergrasshill GAA.

Our U12 girls qualified for the QF of the County where they were beaten by a very strong Donoughmore side. We would like to thank Donoughmore for the refreshments after the game and wish them best of luck for the remainder of the competition. Our girls should be proud of the progress they have made this year and their never stop trying attitude is admirable.

U12 East Cork Championship Semi Final

On Tuesday 27th of September our U12 girls took on Bride Rovers in the East Cork Championship Semi Final in Lisgoold. The first half was a close affair with both teams working hard and creating some great scores. Lisgoold would go in at half time a goal up 3-1 to 2-1. Bride Rovers stepped it up a gear in the second half and despite our best efforts we were unable to peg them back. Bride Rovers won out on a score line 5-3 to 4-4. There were many disappointed faces at the final whistle. The girls can hold their heads high and be incredibly proud of their achievements this year. They reached the East Cork League Final where they were beaten by Aghada who went on to win the County. They also qualified for the county quarter final where they were beaten by Donoughmore who contested the County Final also. The fighting spirit and never give up attitude of this team will no doubt see them achieve success in the future. Dave/Edel/Maria have been a vital part of the teams success this year. We appreciate their time, commitment and dedication to the team. Thank you also to Maeve for organising fixtures. Thank you!

East Cork U14 Championship Quarter Final
Lisgoold/Leamlara played St. Nicks in the East Cork U14 Championship Quarter Final on Thursday 15th September. Lisgoold/Leamlara having had a long summer of training had not played a competitive fixture since April so were a bit rusty. In saying that, they opened the score sheet with a point and scored a further 2 points within 5 minutes to set the tone for the game. But before Lisgoold/Leamlara had time to get into more of a flow, St. Nicks went up the field and although denied on a few occasions by our backs and a few excellent saves made by the keeper, St Nicks registered 3 goals in the first half. Before half time, Lisgoold/Leamlara did show a few sparks of what they are capable of, when they worked the ball up along the wings and into the space created, to allow them to get in for a goal and a well taken point but it was St Nicks who were ahead at the break, 3-01 to 1-04.
St Nicks took charge again at the start of the second half, managing to get a goal and a point to go 7 points ahead. With our heads a little down, Lisgoold/Leamlara knew that they had it in them to play better and take this game to St Nicks. A positional switch in full forward proved a good move for Lisgoold/Leamlara, as we scored 2 points and a goal to narrow the gap to just 2 points. Things began to change in favour of Lisgoold/Leamlara as their goalie made more good saves to prevent the scoreboard changing. Our backs tightened up the marking and began to attack the ball by getting in front of their players. Winning the primary ball allowed them to play good passes up the pitch to our mid-field and half-forwards who were getting in good positions on the wings.
With a new since of determination and belief Lisgoold/Leamlara slowly clawed back score after score, to eventually push past St Nicks and for the first time since the beginning of the game, and took the lead. Further changes to the Lisgoold/Leamlara team aided to 3 goals and a further point being scored to ensure that Lisgoold/Leamlara progress to the Semi Final. Thanks to the referee and all involved in St Nicks for their involvement in an excellent game of football. Well done to Lisgoold/Leamlara who never gave up until the very end, finishing 9 points ahead, having been down 7 during at the start of the second half. We are so proud of all of the girls and their efforts. Final score 5-08 to 4-02. Well done. We would also like to wish U14 Trainer Edel O Riordan all the best on her imminent move to Dublin.
Team; Anna, Rachel B, Rhiona, Leann, Rachel M, Dara (1-0), Emma, Ella (3-2), Clodagh, Kalyssa (0-2), Jess (1-1), Eilis, Laura, Aine (0-3), Meabh, Theresa, Claire, Sarah.

U14 East Cork Semi Final vs Carrigtwohill.
Lisgoold/Leamlara advance to the East Cork U14 Final having overcome Carrigtwohill in what was a thrilling contest played Sunday 9th October at 3pm in Lisgoold. It was Carrigtwohill who started the stronger as they quickly built up a lead scoring some excellent points from various angles inside the Lisgoold/Leamlara defence. Carrigtwohill continued to dominate the score sheet for most of the first half, until Lisgoold/Leamlara began to add up a few well taken points to keep them in contention approaching half time. The scoreboard read 4 points to 7 points in favour of Carrigtwohill at the break.

A few positional switches and the introduction of fresh legs at half time gave Lisgoold/Leamlara a new lease of life in the second half. Every player knew they had much more in them and played as if they each had a point to prove. A hat trick of goals early on in the second half, edged Lisgoold/Leamlara into the lead and gave them the confidence to settle into this game and they began to play some excellent football. Carrigtwohill continued to press forward and looked a consistent threat but the Lisgoold/Leamlara defence followed and hassled any player on the ball, not allowing them the comfort and space they had in the first half. Some fantastic block downs and dispossessions by the Lisgoold/Leamlara players denied several scoring chances from the Carrigtwohill girls. The excellent quality of ball being sent forward by the Lisgoold/Leamlara halfbacks and midfield allowed for further scores to be added by the hard working Lisgoold/Leamlara forwards. Carrigtwohill however, didn't give up and scored a goal to keep Lisgoold/Leamlara on their toes. Further substitutions on the Lisgoold/Leamlara team allowed another great contest against Carrigtwohill to finish out with Lisgoold/Leamlara winning by 7 points to progress to the East Cork Final. Final Score: 3-08 to 1-07. A fantastic team performance by Lisgoold/Leamlara. Well done girls. Well done to Carrigtwohill team and mentors for their part in this great game.
Team: Anna, Emma, Rhionna, Rachel B, Leann, Dara, Sarah, Laura, Claire, Rachel M, Kalyssa (2-01), Jess (0-01), Clodagh, Aine (0-02), Ella (0-03,1f), MaryEllen, Eilis (1-01), Roisin, Meabh, Roisin, Theresa, Aoife.

Phil McCarthy Shield Junior 7s Competition.

We held our Junior 7s Competition on Sunday 2nd October in Lisgoold. This tournament marks the end of our Junior season. It is a day filled with fun, food and some football thrown in. The teams competing were Lisgoold/Leamlara, Mayfield, Midleton and Cobh. Due the death of Referee Dominic Rooney (Carrigtwohill) they had to withdraw from this year’s competition. As a mark of respect a minute’s silence was observed by all present prior to the first game. The Lisgoold/Leamlara team consisted of a mixture of Junior, Minor and u16 players. Some of whom had never played together before. This could hardly be believed when they took on Mayfield in the opening game. Straight from the off there was some great passages of play and understanding among the players. We created some great scores and did enough to win the game. The second game saw the holders Midleton take on Cobh. A strong Midleton side would win out in this one but Cobh did put together some nice passes to score some lovely points. Midleton had little time to rest as they took on Lisgoold/Leamlara in the next game. Midleton were unstoppable in this game. Their pace and eye for goal was too much for Lisgoold/Leamlara on this occasion. Although we were beaten we managed to score 1-5. Mayfield and Cobh competed in the next game. This was one of the closest games of the day with both teams very evenly matched. Cobh would eventually win this tight game. Cobh would face Lisgoold/Leamlara next. Our girls were driven by the fact that victory would mean a place in the final. With a few players having withdrawn with injury it was up to the remainder of the team to get us over the line. With great team work we were able to win this game and set up a final meeting with Midleton. Midleton who had already qualified for the final would play Mayfield next. Midleton would win this one by 4 points completely a hat-trick of wins. The final saw the holder’s vs the hosts. Mayfield stayed on to watch the final and share words of encouragement for both teams. Midleton were strong favourites going into this game having beaten us earlier in the day but we still went out there to make a game of it. Our Goalkeeper and defenders brought off some incredible saves and blocks and although we did manage to keep the scoreboard down Midleton won 2-6 to 0-0. Congratulations to Midleton Junior 7s Winners 2016.The day was a great success and it was fantastic to see players from all teams having the banter with each other between games as they had refreshments. From our point of view we were absolutely delighted with our teams’ performance and it was great to see some of the younger members of the team give such a great account of themselves. Lisgoold/Leamlara (Roy Fahy: Coach) Panel: Anne-Marie Hegarty, Frances Connery, Leanne Woods (Capt), Siomha Walsh, Aoibhe Savage, Laura Whelan, Sarah Kelleher, Emma Murphy, Julieanne Stack, Sarah Murphy, Kerri Brosnan, Orla Fleming. We would like to thank Midleton, Cobh and Mayfield for attending this year’s competition and playing their part in a great day of football. Thank you to Roy/Stephen for training the team this year. We appreciate your time, effort and commitment. Thank you to PJ for refereeing all the games. Thank you to everyone who brought sandwiches, cakes, drinks etc. and those who helped serve them. Thank you to those who setup pitches, the umpires and Edel for first aid. We look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Best Wishes
